Welcome to Lady Manners School

Being a Lady Manners Student

Our students are positive ambassadors for our school. They are ‘confident and develop high aspirations’ and ‘are proud that they attend Lady Manners School’ (Ofsted, March 2020).

Students work hard and achieve consistently strong exam results. They engage in the many extra-curricular activities we provide for personal development, giving our students the opportunities to grow as active, healthy and engaged citizens. Ofsted recognised our work in the area of personal development, awarding us a rating of ‘outstanding’ for this aspect of our school.

You can hear how some of our students feel about being a part of Lady Manners School in this video:

We have an active house system and house competitions are a popular part of school life.

We work closely with all primary schools to ensure we can know your child’s strengths and personality well before they arrive. We visit every student transferring to us in the summer term in their own primary school. We invite the students to Lady Manners School in the summer term for taster days and on one of those days we encourage the students to take the bus and they also experience lunch!

We are proud that Lady Manners School holds the Dyslexia Friendly Schools’ status from the British Dyslexia Association. All student worksheets are printed on cream paper to reduce glare and we also provide reading rulers and overlays for textbooks, ensure that PowerPoint presentations are in dyslexia friendly fonts and give extremely dyslexic students copies of lesson notes. In some cases, a laptop/voice activated software and reader pens are provided for assessments.

We have an excellent Learning Support Department with a dedicated SENDCo, Assistant SENDCo and 7 Teaching Assistants (TAs). TAs provide some in class support for students with an Education, Health and Care Plan and various interventions for others on the Special Educational Needs Register.

We also run a literacy programme in Year 7 to help with phonics and comprehension for any student who may need a little extra help. A specialist TA in maths provides maths intervention for those students who may need this and we have a TA who specialises in supporting students with medical, physical impairment and with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

All teachers have taken part in training led by Autism Outreach. We run a successful ‘All About Me’ Club to support students who have ASD to form relationships with others.

All teachers are given regular training in scaffolding techniques and quality first teaching for all children especially for those with learning difficulties.

We have a dedicated medical room staffed by a medically qualified staff member. We also have several other qualified first aiders on site. In addition to this, we have a TA who is a qualified nurse who supports some students with specific medical needs.

All students attend a 15 minute form time at 9am. They then have five one hour lessons with a 15 minute break in the morning and a one hour lunch break. All students finish school at 3.35pm.
