I was educated at King Edward VII School in Sheffield before commencing a career in property and construction, which has spanned nearly 40 years. I retired a couple of years ago from my position as Regional Director for Vinci Construction UK Limited, responsible for their North East Building Region, and prior to that I spent nearly 30 years in various positions with the M J Gleeson Group, in later years progressing from Managing Director of the Scottish Construction Division, and Managing Director of their Northern Construction business to a National role finishing up as Group Operations Director, which involved me overseeing not only the construction side but the house building, facilities management and the property part of the business. I now have my own consultancy business providing services generally to clients in the Property and Construction sector.

I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Building and previously have been a member of the Construction Industry Training Board’s Yorkshire Committee, have been a Director of a charitable organisation, Professional Construction Skills, and have also been an elected member of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Council. I was a founder member of the Sheffield Local Enterprise Partnership’s Property and Construction Group and was appointed to the University of Sheffield’s Council’s Estates Committee.

I live near Baslow with my wife and numerous animals, and my youngest daughter, who was a former pupil of Lady Manners, is currently in her third year of study at Newcastle University.

I enjoy family, cars, socialising and good food, and spend much of my spare time assisting my wife with her equine interests, generally maintaining the equestrian property where we live, and managing the small property portfolio that we have built up over the years.
