Last week, 50 students of German from years 9, 10 and 12 travelled to Germany to enjoy a packed itinerary for 5 days.
After a very early start and a travel day on Tuesday, students visited the city of Köln on Wednesday, where they saw first-hand how cocoa is produced and chocolate is made at the Schokoladenmuseum. Later in the day they visited the Sport and Olympic museum, and rounded off their sightseeing with a visit to the stunning Gothic cathedral.
Thursday was a packed agenda beginning with a tour of the 800 year old Marksburg castle on the Rhine, where students enjoyed trying the armour for size! The same day included a visit to Koblenz and Deutsches Eck, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle, an important symbol for German unity. In the afternoon there was a drive along the Rhine and a stop in Boppard to enjoy the fabulous views of the Rheinland from the chairlift. After dinner, a walk to the local Eiscafé in Nideggen helped to replenish energy!
Friday was spent in Bonn, the home of Beethoven and former capital of West Germany, where students consolidated their understanding of recent German history at the fabulous Haus der Geschichte museum. Final gifts and souvenirs were purchased during some free time in the stunning city centre and a stop at the Haribo factory shop. The final evening began with Mr Atkin’s fabulous music quiz and the night was rounded off with a fancy dress disco.
Well done to all students who were superb ambassadors for the school and threw themselves into speaking German and learning as much as they could about the country and culture during their time abroad.
