I was born and educated in Ireland, graduating from Trinity College Dublin with a BA (Hons) and PhD in Microbiology. I moved to the UK in 1995 and pursued my research career first in the field of virology at University of Oxford (based at the Institute of Animal Health, Pirbright, Surrey) before moving into cardiovascular research which first brought me to the University of Leicester and finally, the University of Sheffield. In 2006, I “retired” from research to focus on raising my three young children at the time. In 2011, I was appointed a member of the Sheffield Research Ethics committee which allows me to continue my interest in medical research.

From a young age, I have always had a passion for science and loved to share this with anyone who would listen! In 2015, I made the decision to train to teach science and was appointed Teacher of Science at Lady Manners School in 2017. On paper this looked like my dream job, and it has turned out to be the case!

I have eight years' experience in governance serving as Foundation Governor at a primary school in Sheffield where I chaired the Finance and Personnel Committee. I am looking forward to expanding my experience in governance and I am excited to join the Governing Body of Lady Manners School as a Staff Governor to support the school in ensuring the best possible education for our students.
