Improving Sports Facilities

Sport forms an important part of school life and Lady Manners School has an excellent sporting reputation. Sport is used throughout the school to develop social skills and confidence in all students, whatever their ability. Rugby, netball, athletics, dance, football, hockey, table tennis, badminton or basketball are among those we offer.

Many of our students also play sport outside school, with the many local clubs which thrive in and around Bakewell. Some of these clubs work with the School to make use of our facilities in order to provide or extend the facilities they can offer their members. There is a need to develop our current sports facilities in order to continue to provide the best opportunities for our students.

The proposals

We hope to develop our current sports facilities by:

  • the provision of a flood-lit, all weather pitch suitable for hockey, football and rugby training
  • developing new sports pitches for use both by the school and by Bakewell Mannerians Rugby Club
  • providing additional car parking
  • creating new storage facilities
  • replacing the 80 year old sports pavilion

These plans involve moving some of the existing sports pitches from their current position on the opposite side of Shutts Lane to the school. Thanks to Lord Edward Manners kindly offering a large field which stretches behind and to the side of the school for long term lease, students will not have to cross a road to access the new pitches we hope to create here.

The School's plans have developed alongside a District Council local housing need survey which was carried out in 2009 in which 89 households in Bakewell were identified as in need of affordable housing. The District Council identified the School's site following extensive site appraisal work undertaken with Bakewell Town Council and planning experts from the Peak District National Park Authority. The District Council hope to build 40 new affordable homes — for people with a strong local connection to Bakewell or an adjoining parish — on part of the School’s land that is currently a poor quality sports pitch.

The intention is to improve sports facilities for Lady Manners School and the whole community as well as to provide much needed affordable housing in Bakewell. The new sports pitches, as well as additional car parking and new storage facilities, will be used by the school and the Bakewell Mannerians Rugby Club.

Lady Manners School, Bakewell Mannerians Rugby Club, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Westleigh Developments, Pelham Architects, Dales Housing and other partners are all working together on this project.

Fundraising has already started for the new sports pavilion - spearheaded by our active and supportive Parents' Association.
