Years 7, 8 and 9

Director of Studies: Mr K Byrne

Subject structure:

In years 7, 8, and 9, all students study maths for five periods a week. Year 7 students are set in maths after the October half term break. Further information, and schemes of work, are available to current students on their Myvle maths courses.

What we learn:

Year 7:

In Year 7 we work to strengthen student knowledge and ability in the core areas of Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measure and Statistics with a continuous focus on the skills required to analyse, interpret and evaluate results. For the first term we work in mixed ability groups. Following setting (4 sets per half year) we work at the level appropriate for the set. Schemes of work include enrichment tasks and functional problems to extend students problem solving skills.

Year 8:

In Year 8 we work in sets (5 sets per half year) and continue to strengthen student knowledge and ability in the core areas of Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measure and Statistics with further use of Rich Tasks and investigations to broaden the students' skills base. We work at the level appropriate for the set.

Year 9:

In Year 9 we work in sets (9 sets) and begin a 3 year scheme of work to prepare for GCSE. Assessments are more GCSE focussed and we re-set into GCSE groups in the Spring term. We work at the level appropriate for the set and usually set 1-6 cover higher and sets 7-9 cover foundation.
